Man mauled by 3 pit bulls during run, hospitalized

An Athens man is facing surgery after being attacked and bitten by three pit bulls.

Bertilldo Montez, 26, was bitten more than 20 times after being attacked by the dogs during his regular morning run on Sunday. The attack lasted more than 15 minutes.

Brenda Dutton said she heard the dog attack outside her Clark County home. At first, she thought the three pit bulls were fighting each other.

"I've never heard anybody scream like that, never," said Dutton.

Montez tied a tourniquet around his leg with his shirt and made it up the street to his cousin Miriam Surez' home.

"I seen him all covered in blood, from head to toe," said Surez.

Suarez said her cousin was in such bad shape that she didn't even recognize him at first.

"He was like injured so bad that he could barely talk, was losing consciousness, was about to faint. I felt sorry for him," Suarez said.

Animal control took custody of the three pit bulls. They're investigating the attack and whether Dutton's neighbor and landlord, Lamar Johnson, let the dogs lose.

"I heard him laughing about it, laughing about it, saying ‘go, go go girl," said Dutton.

Johnson didn't answer the door when FOX 5 knocked, or a short time later when police came by the home.

Surez claimed that Johnson refused to help her cousin as the dogs attacked.

"He asked for his help. He said, no. He just let him lay there on the road like nothing," said Surez.

So far, no criminal charges have been filed in the attack. The three pit bulls are in the custody of animal control.
