Rev. Jesse Jackson mum on son and daughter-in-law's fate

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The Rev. Jesse Jackson stood behind a podium at Rainbow PUSH on Saturday, nary a mention of the potential prison fate of his son and daughter-in-law.

Just a day before, Jesse Jackson Jr. learned the government is seeking a four-year sentence for embezzling $750,000 from his campaign fund, and 18 months for his wife, Sandi, who also looted from her own campaign fund.Federal prosecutors are pushing for Sandi Jackson to go to prison first so their children, ages 9 and 13, won't be without both parents.

Some stepping out of the Saturday Morning Forum at PUSH headquarters said they worried most about the Jackson children.

"I think it's really unfortunate that both parents are going to be without their children at some point, and vice versa," Elizabeth Bailey said.

"But wrong is wrong and you have to pay for doing wrong. It's just terrible, though. It hurts my heart."Allison Jordan said she's known the Jacksons for years, and says she understands why Sandi Jackson stood by her husband.

"Sometimes we are responsible for our spouse's mistakes, or we support and stand by our husbands. That's the duty of a wife," Jordan said. "She stood by her husband and she supported him and it was a mistake."

The couple pleaded guilty last February. Sandi Jackson pleaded guilty to tax counts tied to using her husband's campaign fund. Both will be sentenced July 3.

The Rev. Jackson has in the past commented on his son's medical condition, and criminal proceedings, most recently appearing with his son at an April Rainbow PUSH gathering. He chose not to discuss the topic with reporters on Saturday.
