FLORENCE, Ariz. -

A 23-year-old man who severely abused his girlfriend's 2-year-old son was sentenced to 40 years of prison on Friday.

According to the Pinal County Attorney's office, John Alvarez took care of the little boy while his mother was at work and on December 21, 2009, he caused the 2 year-old's lumbar spine to fracture and dislocate.

When child's mother came home from work, she took him to urgent care and he was later taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital.

Spokesperson Jim Knupp says doctors found 16 additional fractures and extremely painful internal injuries.

Alvarez was charged with one count of aggravated assault, a class 2 felony, Dangerous Crime Against Children, first degree and one count of child abuse, a class 2 felony, Dangerous Crime Against Children, first degree.

He was found guilty on both counts in April and was sentenced to 20 years of prison on each count, to run consecutively.
