Chester Neighborhood Under Evacuation Due To Possible Flooding

Posted: Updated:
CHESTER, Pa. -

"The creek back here rises. Around here has real bad flooding but it hasn't flooded real bad in years so I hope it stays that way," said Michael Stephens.

His neighborhood of Parker Manor in Chester was under evacuation Friday night. Emergency Management officials said Chester Creek was predicted to crest at 14 feet which could put some of these homes under water. Normal flood stage here is 8 feet.

"I'm gone. I can't be in here if they cut the power off. I got grand kids in here," said Stephens.

His neighbor across the street isn't evacuating. "I already have everything charged. I have batteries and I have candles. I'm ready," said Theresa Goode who also said flooding is common around here with the creek so close but she said they've had many false alarms.

"That water is not going to come over here. It doesn't affect me," said Goode.

Fire officials said it's better to be safe than sorry and not have to perform unsafe rescues.

"It poses a danger to them and rescue crews because we have to attempt a rescue, if we can,  without unnecessarily endangering lives."

A shelter is operating at Showalter Middle School on 10th Street. Shuttle service is provided. Police will patrol the neighborhood while residents are evacuated.
