Minneapolis man charged with Mankato murder

Posted: Updated:

A 24-year-old Minneapolis man was charged Friday with murder in Thursday's stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend and attack of her husband in Mankato, Minn.

Levi Minissale is charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder in the June 6 incident.

According to the charges, Mankato police were called to a home on the 1400 block of Second Avenue around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, where they found the body of Yesenia Gonzales on the kitchen floor, with a severe cut to her throat. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man inside the home had several cuts on various parts of his body. He identified the attacker as Minissale, who he considered a friend. The man told police he woke up to a distant scream while trying to get some sleep between jobs. He said Minissale then came into the room and stabbed him multiple times.

Minissale ran away after the attack, but was later found in the bathroom of a Holiday gas station on North Riverfront Drive.

When interviewed by police, Minissale said he was driving back to Minneapolis from Sioux Falls, S.D., where he spent the night with another woman, when he decided to stop by Mankato. He admitted he was angry with "them," referring to the two victims, and had thoughts about hurting "them."

Minissale admitted to stabbing his ex-girlfriend three or four times. When asked if he believed his ex-girlfriend got what she deserved, Minissale said "in a way, yes." When asked if her husband got what he deserved, Minissale said "in a way, yes and in a way, no."

The investigation is ongoing and these changes may be amended. Levi Minissale remains in custody at the Blue Earth County Jail.
