Small home improvement projects that add big value

Posted: Updated:

It's summertime and that means it's a great time to check off some projects on your Honey-Do list. Here are a couple of ideas that won't break your bank, but should add some extra value to your life this summer.

Lou Alvarado is confined to a wheelchair after falling off of a ladder some years ago. But, that hasn't' stopped him from being handy around the house. In fact, he's professionally known as The Handy Husband.

"We do try to encourage people to do it on their own; but, if they get in trouble, that's when they call us," Alvarado said.

He says the summer months are the perfect time to get some long-standing projects done around the house. He suggests starting on the outside of your house. It takes virtually no time to give furniture a new lease on life.

Alvarado said, "I recommend cleaning it, pressure washing it if it's metal; the same time to get all the crud off. Because you know how we get all that pollen in the spring."

He says you can also pressure wash your porch or deck if it's already started flaking or needs a new coat of paint.

Alvarado said, "Scrap any areas that you think needs to be done and then it doesn't hurt to prime the wood, and then paint it."

And, if you want a project that will add some functionality to your home, head into the garage. It's a great place to add cabinets for storage. You can get these relatively cheap and at any of the Big Box improvement stores.

Alvarado said, "They're quite easy to do. You just want to make that you screw them up into the studs or something solid because you certainly don't want your cabinets falling off the wall."

Little projects can go a long way toward making your house feel even more like home.

All of the projects we just talked about don't require many tools. In fact, you can rent a pressure washer instead of buying one. And, if you decide to hire someone, The Handy Husband says small projects can be started and finished in just one day.
