Bribery charge filed against ex-DC councilmember Michael Brown

WASHINGTON, DC -

Former District of Columbia Councilmember Michael Brown has been charged with bribery and is scheduled to plead guilty.

Court documents say from July 11, 2012 to March 14, 2013 Michael A. Brown  directly and indirectly corruptly demanded, sought, received, accepted, and agreed to receive $55,000 in cash from undercover FBI employees. The government is seeking a judgment against Brown of $35,000.

The charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. A plea hearing is set for Monday.

Brown was charged via criminal information, a document that can only be filed with a defendant's consent and that generally signals that a plea agreement has been reached.

His attorney says Brown has accepted responsibility and has apologized to friends and family.

Brown, the son of the late former Commerce secretary Ron Brown, abruptly dropped out of a special election in April citing personal matters that he said required urgent attention.

Council Chairman Phil Mendelson issued the following statement regarding the latest information on former D.C. Councilmember Michael Brown:

The news of Michael Brown's plea deal is both disturbing and unfortunate.  Even though elected officials are no better than ordinary people, citizens have a right to hold us to the highest standards.  The present news is a reminder that our government has not lived up to those expectations.  Once again the Council, which has striven for a year to regain stability, is damaged by the specter of continuing corruption.  It is my hope that those of us who have been elected to serve will see the news of Mr. Brown's plea as stimulus to redouble our efforts to improve ethics and regain the public's trust.”
