Ashlee White apologizes for Freeport comments

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Ashlee White from the Bravo reality show "Princesses: Long Island" talked exclusively to Fox 5 News.

"I am so unbelievably sorry," she said. She apologized to the people of Freeport, Long Island, after a scene from the first episode of the show in which she said she was uncomfortable there.

"Dad there's literally benches and couches with the green wires and stuff," she tells her dad by phone in the scene while driving through a neighborhood in Freeport.

"The only thing I can tell you is be smart. Are your doors locked?" her father tells her.

Later in the episode, she describes her drive through the town and calls it a ghetto.

"I've been through the ghetto," she says. "I drove through the monsoon."

Those who live and work in Freeport say they were appalled.

Lana Manetto owns the Imperial Diner, which has been in the Freeport community for 42 years. She says the show completely misrepresented the town.

"I was totally aggravated," Manetto said. "I couldn't believe that they made Freeport look so bad."

Manetto added: "I was mortified. I will never watch that show. I will never watch it. It was so bad."

A Facebook page called "Boycott Princesses of Long Island" has nearly 3,000 likes.

Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy is also speaking out: "I am not going to dignify a response to this 'reality show,' but I will issue them a challenge. Come to Freeport. Embrace its richness, our diversity, and enjoy our waterfront."

But White said that despite the calls for a boycott, she hopes people will still tune in.

Federal authorities say seven Long Island restaurants have agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million in back wages to 363 waiters and kitchen workers. The U.S. Labor Department says the restaurants - six in Suffolk and one in Nassau - were accused of paying workers below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. They also were accused of paying employees off the books, failing to pay time and a half for overtime and other violations.
