Former Ravens player Brendon Ayanbadejo to serve as guest editor of Washington Blade

WASHINGTON -

Kevin Naff, Editor of Washington Blade, announced that 2013 Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl Champion, Brendon Ayanbadejo, will serve as the guest editor of an August 30th special-edition issue focused on LGBT issues in professional sports.

“The topic of gay athletes in professional sports has generated significant national attention, and as more athletes ponder coming out while continuing to play, we felt the time was right to publish a first-ever, special sports edition of the Washington Blade,” Naff said.

This is not the first time Ayanbadejo has publicly stood in defense of the LGBT community. His support became clear as early as 2009 when he publicly endorsed marriage equality. In February Ayanbadejo and Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe filed a joint amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme court in support of same-sex marriage in the California Prop 8 case currently in front of the court.

Naff applauded Ayanbadejo’s efforts.

“It was a courageous stand, and [Ayanbadejo’s] advocacy has undoubtedly saved lives and given hope to young athletes coming to terms with their sexual orientation.”

Washington Blade is the oldest, national newspaper of record for the LGBT community. In October 2009, the magazine celebrated its 40 anniversary as an award-winning news source with a large following in print and online.
