ARLINGTON, Va. -

The father of the 18-year-old who died during a tragic skateboarding stunt says he was shocked and stunned when he found out about it.

George Malvar tells FOX 5 his son, John, didn't like to wear a helmet. He says he hopes other young skateboarders will learn from John's deadly mistake and hopes they won't take risky chances.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students and friends attended a candlelight vigil in his honor Wednesday night at Washington-Lee High School.

Funeral services are scheduled for next Wednesday at his church, the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More.
