Councilmember David Catania proposes bills aimed at improving DC public schools

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Following months of school and PTA meetings, Councilmember David Catania is proposing seven education improvement bills.

The bills are aimed at giving more authority to school principals, improving the school lottery system, and will allow administrators to hold back children who are not ready to be prompted to the next grade level.

Catania says 59 percent of all D.C. public high school students are graduating.

The seven bills proposed on Tuesday received support from many on the council and now will go to the education committee for public hearings.

Mayor Vincent Gray and Councilmember Tommy Wells raised concerns about the proposed initiatives which could take decision-making power away from Chancellor Kaya Henderson.
