Stock Market 101: Let's get started

Posted: Updated:

Have you always wanted to get involved with the Stock Market, but you just don't know where to begin? Can you afford to invest? If so, how much is enough?

It might surprise you to learn that you don't have to be a high roller to start investing in the Stock Market. With as little as $50 you could be well on your way.

Most people see the Stock Market like a loud, frantic scene from the movie "Wall Street." But, Atlanta resident Darren Fouts works in construction and admits that even though he wanted to get in on the Stock Market, he's nothing like Charlie Sheen's famous movie character.

Fouts said, "I did not have the money to take some lump sum and put it in."

Morgan Stanley Senior Vice President David Doll says just about anyone can start investing in stock.

"I think there's a perception that investing in the Stock Market requires a large initial lump sum of money to participate, and that's just not true," Doll said.

He says you can get started with as little as $50. Brokers charge fees, so if you want to go it alone, then Doll advises using a dividend reinvestment plan, or a drip. It allows you to buy stock directly from companies in small increments as low as $10.

Doll said, "You want to most likely pick stocks or companies that are familiar to you, something that you are familiar with, you use on a daily basis, your comfort zone, if you will. And, use those companies as a good rounding point for investing."
