Mayor criticizes release of repeat offenders from Fulton Co. jail

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed criticized what he called a "turnstile situation" at the Fulton County Jail. The mayor issued his criticism on Friday while responding to questions about the recent crimes in east Atlanta.

The incidents have brought an intense police investigation, and now a call by the mayor for changes in inmate release policies.

Reed said too many inmates with a history of multiple arrests are allowed back on the streets.

"The numbers are terrible and something has to be done and Fulton County is going to have to step up as a partner and do their job," Reed said. "If you pull all of the data, and all of that is available by open record, you see we have a turnstile situation that is putting lives at risk."

At the same time, the mayor promised a strong police response to the recent murder.

"We have leads that I cannot discuss for obvious reasons. We are going to track that individual and bring these folks to justice," Reed said.

FOX 5 was unable to get a response to the criticism from the Fulton County Sheriff's Office, the court administrator's office and the office of the chief judge of the Superior Court of Fulton County.
