Ladybugs: They're good for your garden

Posted: Updated:

You might spend lots of time trying to get rid of bugs, but did you know they can be good for your garden?  The folks at Pike Nurseries told us how some bugs-- including ladybugs-- can be beneficial, and it's just in time for their big ladybug giveaway this weekend!

Beneficial Bugs
What are beneficial insects?
"Good Bugs" vs. "Bad Bugs" - Bad bugs feed on plants and cause damage (i.e., aphids, whitefly, scale).  Good bugs feed on bad bugs as well as plant nectar and pollen from flowering plants.

Good Bugs: Top beneficial Insects
Ladybugs – Feed on aphids, whitefly, mites and other common pests. Ladybug larvae eat more pests than adults.
Praying Mantis – Eats aphids, whitefly and other pests.

Attracting Good Bugs
You can encourage good bugs to come into your garden by choosing plants that attract beneficial insects: Echinacea, lavender, sunflowers, ornamental grasses, coreopsis, milkweeds, yarrow, dill, basil, and cosmos.

Releasing beneficial insects in your garden
Water your garden before releasing store-bought ladybugs (they prefer moist areas).  Release live insects at dusk when they are less likely to fly away.  Release live insects where there is an abundant source of food.  Make sure you have plants that produce pollen/nectar.
