Police have arrested an Arlington County Sheriff’s deputy in the homicide of a 22-year-old Alexandria man, authorities say.

44-year-old Craig Patterson, a 17-year veteran of the Arlington County Sheriff's Office, has been charged with the murder of Julian Dawkins.

Police say Dawkins was fatally shot during the early morning hours of May 21 after a confrontation with Patterson in the Lynhaven area of Alexandria.

Dawkins was attending a family celebration in the area. Patterson lives only a few blocks from the scene of the shooting.

Dawkins had been a driver for the PBS NewsHour program for the last three years, shuttling tapes, guests and paperwork among various PBS work centers.

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday afternoon and Patterson was taken into custody at a residence in Spotsylvania County Thursday evening.
