D.C. police say it began around 2:15 p.m. when two officer spotted a vehicle that had been taken in a carjacking in Southwest D.C. and ended a few miles away when the suspect stepped out of the car with a gun on Barnaby Street, SE.

According to sources, a gunman came out of the woods and took off in a black Pontiac Trans Am in front of the Bald Eagle Recreation Center on Joliet Street in Southwest D.C.

A marked D.C. Police cruiser followed the vehicle to Barnaby Street, and as officers pulled up behind the vehicle, the gunman came to a stop and got out of the vehicle and shot at the officers.

Police say another officer arrived at the scene and the suspect then shot at that officer, then turned back towards the two officers and fired again at them. The officers then fired their weapons and struck the suspect, identified as 34-year-old Nathaniel McRae of Northwest D.C.

The suspect was taken by ambulance to the hospital. But according to two sources, the ambulance broke down en route to the hospital and a second ambulance had to be brought in. When the suspect arrived at Howard University Hospital, he was pronounced dead.
