DC police have stepped up patrols along Bladensburg Road Northeast after a woman eight months pregnant is gunned down there overnight.
She was standing outside a house in the 1000 block when someone opened fire.
"I heard the shots, and I was worried, because my kids were in that house, “Martina Morris says.
Morris's three children are fine, but the pregnant woman isn't. She's in critical condition with gunshot wounds. Neighbors say those bullets weren't meant for her.
"She was an innocent bystander. She didn't have nothing to do with what was going on," Morris says.
Police were in the neighborhood all day today, checking id's, questioning people, and looking for a suspect who fled on foot.
He's described as a black male with a medium complexion, 5'11", about 20 years old, with dreads. At the time of the shooting, he was wearing a green jacket.
Michael Williams has lived in the area for 13 years, and knows people who've been killed or maimed there.
"Friend of mine got beat in the alley for two dollars. They beat him with a metal rod and killed him. A young guy got shot outside a club over there. It's pretty rough around here, Williams says.
In December 2012, two men were shot to death in the 1100 block of Bladensburg. In February 2013, a man and a woman were shot while sitting in a car. They survived. And now on the same block, a pregnant woman is shot.
Even though police have increased their visibility, Williams is sticking with his own personal safety plan.
“I try to get in the house before it gets dark, and once I do, I call everybody to make sure they made it home safe."
