Missing College Student From Montco Found Safe

Posted: Updated:
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -

A college student from Pennsylvania who went missing last week on his drive home from a New England college has been "located unharmed," almost a week after he disappeared, authorities say.

Pennsylvania State Police issued a news release Thursday afternoon announcing that Matthew Royer, 21, of Collegeville, had been found.

But state police said, "The family requests that the media not contact them nor reveal his location as they wish to consider this a private and closed matter."

Other media outlets are reporting that the University of Rhode Island student -- who left his Rhode Island apartment last Thursday for a seven-hour drive back to his parents' Collegeville home -- ultimately turned up in North Carolina.

State police would not confirm that information to FOX 29 News on Thursday afternoon.

"This incident is closed by the Pennsylvania State Police and there will be no further comment made regarding this matter," said a state police fax. "the family and the Pennsylvania State Police greatly appreciate all the assistance and support by the public."

Royer was seen on surveillance video at a gas station near Allentown, about an hour from home, around 1 a.m. Friday.

Then, police said someone saw his 2008 silver Chevy Cobalt in Myerstown, about an hour and a half away from home.

Royer's family said at the time that they didn't know why he wouldn't come home, and they made a public plea begging for him to come back.

"Matthew, if you can hear this, no matter what the circumstances are, your friends and your family, we all love you," said the young man's mother. "Please contact us. Come home. We will come anywhere. Anyplace anytime for you. We're here for you and we love you and miss you.

Police had said they were working on dozens of tips to bring Royer back home safe.
