Ex-student charged with planning violence at high school

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 19-year-old former student at Glenbard East High School in Lombard has been charged with planning to commit an act of violence at the school, DuPage County prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Michael Santoro appeared in court Wednesday morning and Judge Elizabeth Sexton set bond at $500,000, according to a statement from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office said.

In November 2012, Santoro made plans "of a violent nature against the school," according to the statement. The alleged plans remained unknown until February when Santoro revealed them to a friend, who did not report the threat to police until two weeks ago, prosecutors said.

An investigation led by Lombard police led to the charges. Police credited the friend's action for preventing anything from happening.

"He thought there were certain warning signs, some red flags about Mr. Santoro's behavior, some things that he had told him, and then some actions he had taken including purchasing a vest and obtained some aerial photos of the high school," says Lombard Police Chief Ray Byrne.

Authorities said at no time were students or staff at Glenbard East in any danger. Police worked closely with school officials to maintain safety, and determined Santoro acted alone, according to prosecutors.

Santoro had most recently been living with his grandmother in Lombard. No one answered the door when we knocked.

Prosecutors say in Santoro's journal he had certain sections that he had titled: "The Start," "Finding a Way Out" and "Doomsday."

"It was very lengthy, it was very detailed and it clearly laid out a well thought out plan about how to commit an act of violence against the high school," Byrne says.

In addition to the felony disorderly conduct, Santoro, of the 600 block of South Finley Road in Lombard, faces misdemeanor charges of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of ammunition without an FOID card.

The judge ordered home confinement and a GPS monitoring device should Santoro post bail. In addition, he was ordered to have no contact with anyone from Glenbard East and to stay away from the school.

His next court appearance is scheduled for June 17 before Judge Kathryn Creswell in Wheaton.
