Laveen girl set to graduate with perfect attendance

LAVEEN, Ariz. -

14 years of school and never missed a day. A valley high school senior is set to graduate with a perfect attendance record.

How did she do it? Luck and determination.

In 14 years, this student never got so sick that had to miss school. And if she didn't feel good, she just powered through it.

Cylie Martin knows the halls of her high school better than most students. After all, she's always been there. And this wasn't just a high school thing.

"I haven't missed any days of school. I have perfect attendance for 14 years," says Cylie Martin.

She's got the certificates to prove it.

"Whenever I got sick, I didn't really get that sick. I would only get sick during breaks. And it was like my goal kind of to go to school on time and be in school. I always felt like school was very important and people had to be there."

Cylie is set to graduate from Fairfax High School in Laveen and even in the final days of her senior year, she didn't give in.

"Sometimes it is brought up in conversation like who is going to senior ditch day and I am over there staying quiet cause I can't ditch of course. And they are all like 'Cylie is not cause she has perfect attendance.'"

Cylie deserves much of the credit, but you can't forget about her equally determined grandmother.

"Very proud. Very proud. She has really done good," says grandmother Charlotte Martin.

Grandma has a secret for getting the kids off to school on those mornings when they just don't want to get out of bed.

"I have a squirt bottle and I keep it in the refrigerator and if they do not get up I go in there and start squirting them, they have to go to school."

Cylie may not use a squirt bottle, but she hopes to one day see her children with certificates like these too.

"I knew school was important and I am going to teach my kids that school is very important and I don't think I am going to let them miss a day of school," says Cylie.

After graduation, Cylie plans to go to community college and one day end up in nursing school.
