Kids help Humane Society through 'Chores for Charity'

Posted: Updated:

It's nothing unusual for kids to do some chores to earn money. But some valley kids stepped to do some extra chores -- and they did it for charity.

The third graders did this to help the Arizona Humane Society. Students from Gethsemane Lutheran School bought what the animals needed and it was all out of their very own pockets.

"The kids brought dog food, blankets, toys and everything for our shelter beds," says Sentari Minor.

"There's so many animals here that don't have homes and don't have anything and we decided to donate to them," says Kelyn Dettlaff, student at Gethsemane Lutheran.

"The children do chores above and beyond what's expected at home and earn money, and then we go shopping a couple of times throughout the year," says Marissa Moffitt, teacher.

"We went to PetCo with money we did for chores and we went shopping," says Dettlaff.

The project is called Chores for Charity. The students toured the campus, played with the dogs and even held the rabbits.

"We're so amazed by the support and it's great because we're moving into the summer months and we'll put these things to great use and we're happy that the kids chose us to engage and we're excited that we brought them out on this tour today and they got to see where their gift had an impact," says Minor.

"The group I was working with, 3 or 4 students we had roughly $80," says Moffitt. "Very exciting process, kids get into it, kids learn how to serve and they can grow a lot."

Grow up into adults giving back to the community.

"I felt really good about it. It's very important because they need it," says Dettlaff.

The Arizona Humane Society helps 44,000 animals a year and depends on the community's help to survive.
