Woman Charged Over Fight With Girl, 11, At Philly School

PHILADELPHIA -

Police are investigating a bizarre confrontation at a local elementary school. The alleged combatants were a grown woman and an 11-year-old girl.

Some of the details are still a little twisted, reports FOX 29's Bruce Gordon, who has been sorting this one out all day.

This much we know: The woman, identified as 27-year-old Atiff Brown, entered Anderson Elementary School on Thursday morning to drop off her daughter in the auditorium. The drop-off was made inside the school because of rainy weather.

Brown then allegedly went over to an 11-year-old girl, and verbally confronted her.

That's where the story gets muddy...

"I'm really upset because it should have never been allowed to happen, and 'sorry' is not good enough," said Bobbi Webster, the 11-year-old's mother.

She says her daughter, Callyse, was minding her own business in the auditorium when a woman and her daughter approached.

Webster says security camera video, which she was allowed to watch, shows the woman verbally abusing Callyse.

Webster says the video shows a teacher trying to calm the situation.

"And he's telling her, you know, 'Move back, you have to leave.' And then you start seeing this woman swinging on my daughter. I mean, she has my daughter by the hair."

"Attempting to punch?" Gordon asked.

"Yeah, she's punching her," Webster answered.

She added, "My daughter's 11. She's a grown woman. And you see her daughter jumping in and hitting my daughter."

School district officials told Gordon that they have interviewed that teacher eyewitness. He says the adult was indeed verbally threatening the 11 year old and would not leave.

But, according to Philadelphia School District spokesman Fernando Gallard, "At that point, a female student that the adult was confronting reached out and hit the adult in the face."

"You're saying, just so I'm clear, you're saying this 11-year-old girl actually struck the adult first?" Gordon asked.

"That is correct," said Gallard, adding that the teacher tried to pull the adult away.

"And then the adult's daughter then stood up and hit the child who had hit her mom," Gallard said.

"The teacher's telling you, 'I saw it, and the little girl struck the adult first,'" Gordon clarified.

"That is correct," answered Gallard.

Webster says the woman, Brown, followed her verbal threats by raising her hand. Only then, says Webster, did her daughter strike the woman in defense.

"I'm angry," Webster said. "I feel like I want to retaliate but I know that's not the right thing to do. So I know just to put it in God's hands."

Brown is charged with simple assault, defiant trespassing, recklessly endangering another person and making terroristic threats.

Callyse was back in school Friday. Her mom says she's got a puffy eye and is missing a little bit of hair but did not want to miss classes, Gordon reported.
