Man dies after struggle in SW Atlanta home

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta police say a 16-year-old intervened when a domestic situation unfolded in his home overnight.  Investigators say a man died of injuries he sustained during a struggle inside the house.

Authorities say the situation unfolded at a home on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. They say  Shevorney Lynch lives at the home with her five children, ages 2-16.  Lynch told officers that the father of one of her kids had been harassing her all day. When she stopped answering the phone, he showed up at the house uninvited and intoxicated around 3 a.m.

Police say the man, identified as 43-year-old Eddie Williams, Jr., somehow got into the home and there was a struggle.  They say the Lynch's 16-year-old son got involved, and he and his mother held the man down until officers arrived.

"I jumped off the couch and I ran and got him, and I pushed him to the floor," the boy, whose name is Andre, told FOX 5.

Williams was critically injured during that struggle and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital. He was later pronounced dead. Police said that Williams died of asphyxiation.

The incident remains under investigation, but police said that it appears the residents were defending themselves.

Detectives say that although it's unlikely they will file charges against the mother and her son, they've turned the case over the district attorney's office to decide.
