Budget-friendly weddings: Go DIY

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

For most women, there's a big difference between the wedding you wish you could have, and the wedding you can actually afford.

Tiffany Gordon, who is a bride-to-be, didn't want to go over $8,000 on her wedding budget.  She and her fiancé, Kevin, are getting married on Memorial Day, and that budget has been amended quite a bit.  Gordon says she found that catering alone would run her somewhere between $2,500 and $3,000 for her 150-person wedding.

So, Tiffany decided to make every aspect of her wedding do-it-herself, from the invitations to the food to the bouquets.  She and Kevin even painted columns for their decorations.

Elizabeth Kroll, the bargain guru behind all her advice, www.big-wedding-tiny-budget.com, says there are a number of ways to save on the big day, and it starts with the guest list.

"You save money from start to finish," Kroll said.  "Everything from invites to the number of centerpiece you have to catering to linens."

Kroll says you can also save by opting for one location, instead of having the ceremony and the reception in separate spots.  She says it helps with the vendors you pay hourly, and you don't have to worry about a cost for transporting the bridal party.

Kroll also says you should nix the open bar, and go for a signature cocktail instead.  Music, she says, can consist of an iPod and a caring friend.  If you can't do something yourself, Kroll recommends finding someone who is still building their portfolio and may not cost as much.
