Teen Comes Face To Face With Black Bear

HULMEVILLE, Pa. -

Lindsay Leinheiser took her dog Gabby for a bathroom break Wednesday afternoon around 1 p.m. that she'll never forget.

"It was scary! I was shaking. I was scared,"exclaimed Leinheiser.

The teenager walked out her front door on Midway Avenue where she came face to face with a huge black bear on her walkway. One expert says it was easily 500-pounds.

"I started panicking, said the teenager. "I was shaking! I was like, 'Gabby, Gabby come here!'
And she kept walking, so I grabbed her, went inside and called dad."

Paul Leinheiser made sure his daughter was OK, then canvassed the Hulmeville neighborhood doing a little bear hunting.

Paul snapped a picture of the bear in the backyard of someone's home on Zimmerman Lane. 

With her car nearby and escape plan in place, Debbie Messina captured pictures of the bear in front of Jake Kurko's home on Access Road. He was inside working and had no idea the danger lurking outside.

"This is shocking for us to have that bear that size in our neighborhood," said Kurko.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the neighborhood filled with kids that turned into an animal kingdom for a few hours.

Lindsay was just thankful she was able to protect her dog Gabby and escape the unbearable situation right in front of her home.

Residents who saw the bear say it took off east into the woods.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission says this is mating season for bears, so it's becoming more common to see bears lurking in Bucks County.

They believe it may have come from somewhere north like Lehigh Valley or South Jersey.
