Sky wins pre-season opener vs Liberty

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO  – Elena Delle Donne put up 17 points in her first professional appearance as her Sky won their preseason game against the New York Liberty 85-67 in front of a thousand CPS schoolchildren at Chicago State University.

The Sky got a lot of help from their bench as every dressed player saw time on the floor and all but one scored. Guard Allie Quigley had 14 points and shot 50%, including two 3-pointers, and guard Shay Murphy scored eight of her 10 points late in the first quarter to increase the Sky's lead.

After a tight first quarter, the Sky closed the first half ahead by 17 points and kept a double-digit cushion on the Liberty for most of the remaining time.

New York's height limited looks for center Sylvia Fowles (eight points, seven rebounds), and the rest of the Sky's frontcourt, but the Sky guards found a groove and shot over 45% from the floor.

Delle Donne had a successful day in her first time playing in a Sky uniform. The rookie from the University of Delaware led the team in scoring and had two 3-pointers, three rebounds and shot 100 percent from the free throw line.

The team shot over 45% from the floor and nearly 77% from the free throw line. Sky guards Epiphanny Prince scored 13 points and Sharnee Zoll-Norman recorded seven assists.

Approximately 1,250 elementary schoolers packed in the Jacoby Dickens Center to see the game as part of the Sky's "Game Plan for Peace." The game kicks off the team's anti-violence initiative with CeaseFire Illinois and the Cook County Sheriff's Department. Kids in attendance participated in dance contests, got free t-shirts and made a lot of noise for the Sky.

Chicago native Cappie Pondexter led the New York Liberty with 14 points. Liberty guard/forward Alex Montgomery also had 14 points. It was Coach Bill Laimbeer's first appearance as head coach of the Liberty, who are now 0-2 in the preseason.

The Sky take on number one overall draft pick Brittney Griner on May 27 to open the regular season. The game is scheduled to air on ESPN at 4pm CST. The team then takes on the Connecticut Sun for their home opener at Allstate Arena on May 31.
