Crypts vandalized at West Virginia cemeteries

Posted: Updated:

In a place where people are supposed to rest in peace, there is shock, and also, disbelief.

As Tpr. 1st Class R.D. Eshbaugh put it: "To be honest with you, I can't really wrap my arms around why somebody would do it in the first place. I'm baffled."

Eshbaugh, of the West Virginia State Police, will help figure out why somebody vandalized mausoleums and opened caskets at two locations a few miles apart.

On Sunday, State Police got a call from Rosedale Cemetery in Martinsburg.

"They noticed that some of the panels had been removed,” says Eshbaugh. “Some of the granite was broken. Other stuff was disturbed at the scene."

Then on Tuesday morning, police got a call from Pleasant View Memory Gardens. Investigators say caskets were removed and put back in mausoleums.

Opening a crypt requires a special tool. The trooper estimates the vandals tampered with 50 crypts.

Frank Harmon came by to make sure his mother's was not one of them.

"We were just checking on her gravesite making sure everything was OK,” says Harmon. “And, as far as we can tell, everything was fine for us.”

A spokesperson for Rosedale says the cemetery is notifying the affected families. An inventory of belongings for each casket will help investigators determine if anything has been taken. The medical examiner is being consulted.
