DETROIT (WJBK) -

Latoiya Mitchell-Thomas has been found not guilty of attempted murder and assault, convicted only of a concealed weapons charge.

She admitted to opening fire into a group of people after a party on the Detroit Princess last August. Another woman fired back, and six people were wounded in the shootout.

Even though she shot first, Mitchell-Thomas claimed the shooting was in self-defense because she was trying to stop people from beating up her husband. A jury believed her.

Defense attorney Byron Pitts is a pleased man.

"It was difficult to even pick a jury because so many people had heard bits and pieces of the story, but they hadn't heard the whole truth," he said.  "The whole truth is that my client was protecting her husband, period, and there was nobody else helping her."

"This is one woman who stood up against a crowd of 15 to 20 people who had basically formed a mob to hurt her husband, seriously injure him and possibly kill him."

"They got it wrong in my heart of hearts, but it's not for me to say. The jury is a bigger entity than me, and my opinion really doesn't matter. The jury has spoke, and I respect that," said attorney James Gaylen, Junior.

"One lone woman acts heroically... to save her husband. That's the real story. That's the story that the jury heard, and that's why they found her not guilty today," Pitts said.

"Here's what I say to Latoiya Mitchell-Thomas. Count your blessings," Gaylen, Junior said. "How do I go on for my client? The way I always go on, to the bloody end I call it."

Gaylen, Junior is the attorney for LaDon Richard. She is set to go on trial next month and is accused of grabbing a handgun outside the Princess that night and firing and hitting Michael Thomas, Latoiya's husband, in the back.

"My client had a weapon in her purse. She had a concealed weapons permit to carry that weapon. She always carried that weapon in her purse. She did not discharge a weapon that night," Gaylen, Junior said.

"A jury will hear what she did or did not do. How the acquittal of my client, who actually acted heroically to save her husband, how that affects his client is not my concern," Pitts said.

"I welcome the prosecution's very best against my client because I'm convinced that a jury will find her not guilty... because my client's not guilty," Gaylen, Junior said.

Richard is the sister of the young woman that was assaulted on the boat by Michael Thomas. Richard is facing serious charges, including two counts of assault with intent to murder.

Michael Thomas pled guilty to felonious assault.
