The Talker: Prospect HS divides gym class by fitness levels

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Prospect High School in the northwest suburbs is dividing students by fitness level and putting them in separate gym classes.

Students take fitness assessments. The ones who have higher fitness stay in the regular gym program -- team sports, etc. Kids with lower fitness are in separate classes that include cardio workouts.

Supporters say this better tailors physical education to each student's needs. Critics say it could stigmatize kids in the "lower" group, and also separates kids instead of teaching them to all play together and get along.
