Bear Caught In La Canada-Flintrige Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

LA CANADA-FLINTRIDGE (CNS) A bear was spotted in a La Canada-Flintridge neighborhood today, prompting authorities to put a nearby elementary school on lockdown.

A deputy darted the bear with a tranquilizer near Crown Avenue and Baptiste Way about 3 p.m.

"We're just waiting for it to take effect," Deputy R. Whittenburg said.

About an hour later, deputies confirmed the bear was unconscious while they were  awaiting state Fish and Game rangers to pick up the California black bear and take him back into the wild.

The bear, probably hungry and thirsty, was first seen in a tree today, but then started ambling through backyards, jumping fences between properties.

Three people who were taking a dip in a swimming pool got a scare when the bear came bounding across a fence. They quickly ran inside to safety.

Paradise Canyon Elementary School was temporarily placed on lockdown.
