NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Jack Bauer will soon lock and load and make his way back into action.

FOX Broadcasting Co. has announced the return of the hit action TV show "24" in a shorter format. The 12-episode so-called event series "24: Live Another Day" will debut in summer 2014 on Fox 5.

Kiefer Sutherland will reprise his Emmy Award winning role as CTU Agent Jack Bauer.

"The response to '24' is unlike anything I have ever experienced as an actor before," Sutherland said in a news release. "To have the chance to reunite with the character, Jack Bauer, is like finding a lost friend. The story ideas from Howard Gordon are exciting and fresh, and will not disappoint.

Each season of the original series, which ran from 2001 to 2010, featured 24 hours of narrative unfolding in real-rime over 24 episodes. Episodes in "24: Live Another Day" will also unfold in real-time but will portray 12 hours of a 24-hour period, the network said.

The first six seasons of the show were primarily set in the Los Angeles area. Season seven unfolded in Washington, D.C., and the final season featured Bauer fighting bag guys in New York City.

"Jack Bauer has always been an exciting, thrilling character, and I confess that I've missed him. I think the audience has too," executive producer Howard Gordon said in a news release. "The character has evolved through the years, and this new and exciting event series format is perfect to tell the next chapter of his story and continue to reflect how the world is changing."

For several years, Sutherland, Gordon, and FOX expressed interest in bringing "24" to the big screen as a feature film, but those plans never materialized. The success of several recent shorter-season shows, sometimes dubbed "event series," (such as Fox's "The Following), likely made the climate on the small screen more hospitable to this project.

"24" was nominated for 73 Emmy Awards, winning for Outstanding Drama Series in 2006, according to FOX.
