Teen daughter, boyfriend arrested in fatal stabbing of Ellicott City man

ELLICOTT CITY, Md. -

A 14-year-old Ellicott City girl is behind bars, accused in the brutal stabbing death of her father, a well-known local blogger.

Police say her 19-year-old boyfriend, Jason Bulmer, is also accused in the crime on Winding Ross Way. Police say the two had been plotting to kill Dennis Lane for two months.

"The two decided that overnight that the crime would happen,” says Howard County Police Spokesperson Sherry Llewellyn. “The victim's daughter left the basement sliding glass door open so he (Bulmer) could slip in, and he did. Once inside, she convinced him to stab her dad to death.”

Investigators say another adult female was in the house when the crime happened. She heard the commotion and called 911. It didn't take long for police to piece together what happened.

"Both of the suspects were in an upstairs bedroom, and investigators could see blood on one of them, which clearly indicated their involvement," Llewellyn says.

Police say Bulmer had blood on his hands and clothing. He and the 14-year-old are now both facing first and second-degree murder and conspiracy charges.

Neighbors say the victim was the rock of this relatively new community, and the person least likely to die so tragically.

"That particular neighbor was the glue that held the neighborhood together,” says Derek Robertson. “He has Fourth of July picnics and fireworks at this house. The nicest man in the neighborhood.”

Both teen suspects are students at Mount Hebron High School.

Howard County Schools Director of Communications Rebecca Amani Dove released this statement: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and everyone affected by this terrible tragedy. Counselors and psychologists will be available to provide any emotional support students and staff may need when they return to school on Monday."

A motive hasn't been nailed down yet, but police have some clues.

"This homicide was driven by the victim's 14-year-old daughter. Detectives say she convinced her boyfriend they would run away together once it was over," says Llewellyn.

Lane's daughter and Bulmer are both charged as adults.
