Our Father's Hands helps Cobb County families

Posted: Updated:
COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

It's clothing for a cause, and it's changing people's lives in Cobb County one family at a time. Our Father's Hands in Powder Springs consider themselves the ultimate recyclers. It's a gently used store that not only provides a great value to customers, but also food and clothing to the homeless.

"What's unique is we fill a niche," said Our Father's Hands executive director Linda Oviatt.

With name brands like Banana Republic, Polo, and Versace, the resale shop is filled with quality clothing at low prices, but it's where the money goes that sets them apart.

"What we do with our proceeds that we make out of the store is provide new socks, new shoes, and new underwear for the homeless children and indigent children in the Cobb County school system," said Oviatt.

Our Father's Hands and school social workers like Petrina Fowler work together to help kids and their families, and the numbers who have benefited, may surprise you.

"When you hear Cobb County, I think people just think all of Cobb County is very affluent, but the numbers for homelessness are pretty high. I know here at Our Father's Hands they served over 1,600 kids last year," said Fowler.

When a need is posted in the PTSA newsletter, donations pour in from the more affluent parts of the county, and those donations stay in the county.

"The relationship is very collaborative. Every week, I'm coming to the schools and picking up bags and bags of clothing from the schools because they're able to provide a need," said Cobb Co. schools social worker Bethany Miller.

Taking advantage of Our Father's Hands is not only anonymous, but in the store program recipients are treated just like any other customer.

"They come here, and pick out whatever they want, try it on. It's current. They get to look like all the other kids in the schools," Oviatt said.

Our Father's Hands also provides school uniforms or caps and gowns when needed. Because of the relationship that they have with the school system, there is very little red tape. The family's needs have already been vetted by a social worker, so they can usually get help with what they need within an hour.
