WHEATON, Md. -

Police say a woman was fatally struck by an SUV in Wheaton Thursday afternoon.

Police say 77-year-old Maria Lusminia Colindres, of Silver Spring, was hit while waiting at a bus stop around 4:37 p.m. on Veirs Mill Road near Ferrara Avenue.

Colindres was transported to Suburban Hospital, where she later died.

Authorities say the driver of the SUV, 56-year-old Cheryl Denise Green, of Rockville, was attempting to make a U-turn on Veirs Mill Road. Investigators believe she struck a curb, crossed lanes of traffic in both directions, including the center median, and struck the victim sitting on a bench at the bus stop.

The driver had three children with her in the vehicle. No one in the SUV were hurt.
