An Motor Vehicle Department employee has been busted for making fake IDs and selling them to fugitives and people in the country illegally.

The fake IDs were being sold for $2,000 apiece. He allegedly made 24 fake IDs and some of those IDs were sold to illegal drug smugglers.

He was trusted to work at the MVD, but police say Jose Ayala broke that trust.

Ayala pleaded guilty to making two dozen fake IDs. Police say he would take photos of people in the country illegally at the MVD office in Buckeye, where he worked. Then he would put their picture on a real license, giving them a fake name.

Investigators first found out about this last August when they pulled a suspicious car over. The driver, Pedro De Paz, pulled out an Arizona ID then admitted to police it was fake and he was in the country illegally.

Police say De Paz also led them to a home where they found a million dollars' worth of marijuana along with weapons and seven illegal immigrants.

From that fake ID, MVD investigators were able to track it to Ayala who worked in the MVD's customer service department. He was arrested weeks later.

According to court records, in the last 9 months investigators have arrested most of the people who paid for those fraudulent IDs. But police say this investigation isn't over.

Investigators say there are a few more arrests that need to be made.

We contacted ADOT and Phoenix Police. Both can't comment, saying they're planning on having a news conference on this Friday morning

Ayala was hired by the MVD in 2005. He's not a U.S. citizen. He's a permanent resident.
