Delays frustrate travelers at Atlanta airport

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Frustrated travelers say unusually long security lines Thursday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport caused them to miss their flights.

Some people say they waited as long as 90 minutes just to get through security on Thursday morning.

University of South Carolina assistant football coach, G.A. Mangus tweeted, "The Atlanta airport has longest lines ever seen. People missing flights left and rt!!

So what happened?

The TSA won't say why the wait times were so unusually long.

Several travelers told FOX 5 that TSA workers told them it was because of the sequestration cuts.

"Understaffed is excuse just explained to me! Haha. What a joke," Mangus said in a separate tweet.

"If it's because of sequestration, that makes it a little bit worse because the budget cuts is causing it," said Denise Labat, a traveler at the airport on Thursday.

The TSA would not make that connection; in fact, a spokesperson told FOX 5's Chris Shaw that most people had to wait in the security line about 45 minutes, though the spokesperson didn't dispute the 90 minute claims.

"An hour and a half does seem a little ridiculous, especially if you're traveling for work," said traveler Lauren Leffelman.

The  airlines are watching. Both Delta and Southwest confirmed that they have been in contact with the TSA to voice concerns over delays not only on Thursday, but the past several days.

They want something done, before the busy summer travel season.

"It's not pleasant to travel anymore. You can't really pack what you want to take, you have to do the little quart containers, and so a 90 minute wait would just put the icing on the cake," said Amanda Finley.

Congress has recently set aside some money for agencies like the TSA to help with these sequestration cuts. The TSA spokesperson said that will help make up for some of the cuts.
