Cleveland case brings hope to families with missing children

PHOENIX -

Three women who vanished more than a decade ago found safe in Cleveland. It's giving new hope to parents whose children have been missing and never been found.

The question of what happened to 13-year-old Brandy Myers has haunted a Sunnyslope neighborhood. She vanished without a trace 21 years ago.

"I used to live across the street from where she disappeared and it was something that you never stop thinking about," says Karen Humphrey.

"We truly believe Brandy was abducted somewhere in this neighborhood and there's hundreds of houses that way," says Detective Melissa Lutch, Phoenix PD missing person's department.

It was May 26th of 1992. Brandy set off walking up 5th Street from her family's apartment on Hatcher.

She was going door to door to collect for a read-a-thon at school. She left at about 5 p.m. and was never seen again. Those who live out there still hold out hope.

"She's out there somewhere and she'll be found, I mean all these years you don't give up," says Sharon Humphrey.

Detective Lutch says the Cleveland case where 3 young women were found alive after disappearing is a powerful reminder about holding out hope and staying alert in your neighborhood.

"What's important about that is you have all these neighbors in this neighborhood that never noticed anything unusual, and things like Cleveland bring to light what is going on in our neighborhood… hopefully someone who was living in this neighborhood in 1992 may remember something or has always known something but thought, oh I don't want to bother the police department, they seem busy enough," says Lutch.
