Drug smuggling "nuns" caught with 13 pounds of cocaine

SAN ANDRES ISLAND, COLOMBIA -

Three women dressed as nuns were caught with more than 13 pounds of cocaine under their clothing.

Authorities say the three fake nuns were trying to smuggle the drugs onto Colombia's San Andres Island.

Police became suspicious of the young women and searched them after they arrived on the island on a flight from Bogota.

Police say the trio appeared to be nervous and the fabric of their habits didn't look right.

Each woman had more than four pounds of cocaine strapped to her legs, according to authorities.

The women have been jailed on drug-trafficking charges.

Police say the female suspects burst into tears when they were caught and said they were having financial problems.

Officials say San Andres is just off Nicaragua's coast and is located along a smuggling route for cocaine that's brought from mainland Colombia.
