Christie Tells Paper He Had Secret Stomach Surgery In February

TRENTON, N.J. -

He has been defending his weight for years, but now we're hearing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie may have had secret stomach surgery.

According to an exclusive article in the New York Post, Christie underwent lap-band stomach surgery to slim down for the sake of his wife and kids.

Christie, who turned 50 this year, told the Post he had the surgery at a center back in February, and he registered under a false name.

Initially, back in September when he did the consults, he had the doctors come down to him so people wouldn't figure it out.

The operation included putting a silicone tube around his stomach to limit the amount of food he can eat at one time.

The governor has been repeatedly called out for his weight. In the video clip above, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill talked about it on "Good Day" back in November 2010.

"OK, I'm going to say this, and everyone's going to get mad: He's fat," Hill said. "... He's fat for a politician. He does not have the body type to win a national election."

Gov. Jon Corzine at one point even ran television ads against Christie, making reference to his "big" issue.

Lots of people have talked about the need for the governor to tackle his health issues.

Christie told the paper the operation was solely for his family, and it was not motivated by thoughts of running for president.

Despite that statement, some people think otherwise.

Christie has never officially revealed his weight. Estimates are that he was at 300 to 350 pounds, and so far it appears he may have already lost about 40 pounds.
