The cold chill Max Keshani feels at his ice cream shop doesn't come from the walk-in freezer. It's from the news he received in a letter Friday.
It tells Max his lease is not being renewed. He'll have to leave his building by June 30 just as he's entering the busy season.
"I feel very sad. Very disappointed," says Keshani.
His store, Max's Best Ice Cream, on Wisconsin Avenue has been a fixture in Glover Park for 20 years. Inside, there are hundreds of photos of neighborhood kids on the wall.
“When I look at this wall, this is my joy, this is my life,” says Keshani. “I am proud to say - this kid - I was here when he was was 5 years old or 1 year old and now he's 20 or 30 years old.”
Max started the business with his wife, Marsha, who died of cancer almost two years ago. Now, his daughter helps run it.
Neighbor Eleanor Mackey says both of her daughters had their first taste of ice cream a Max's.
"When you walk in there, you don't see somebody else. You see a member of the family and they greet you like you're a member of the family," says Mackey.
The landlord is not commenting, but Rocklands Real Barbeque next door says it's expanding into Max's space and in a press release told FOX 5: "...we've always enjoyed having Max's Best as a neighbor."
Residents in Glover Park have started a Facebook page to rally support for Max.
