Arizona Cardinals player Daryl Washington surrendered to police Friday morning. He was booked into jail and released on $4,500 bond.
Washington surrendered at his attorney's office. He was in and out of jail fast. Police arrested him at 9:15 a.m. He was booked and saw a judge at 11, and was out at 2 p.m.
For most people, this process takes all day.
Judge: "You are here, one count of aggravated assault. Second count of aggravated assault, a class 4 felony."
Daryl Washington bit his lip as he listened to a judge read the charges against him.
The Cardinals linebacker is facing two felony assault charges. He's accused of beating the mother of his 5-month-old baby on Wednesday afternoon.
Police say the 27-year-old woman had a broken collarbone, bruises on her body and marks on her neck. Washington's attorney asked the judge for a low bond amount.
"Mr. Washington resides here in Phoenix, he has a house he's had for a year, he's also a player with the Cardinals," said Washington attorney's Phil Noland.
According to court records, Washington and the baby's mom have had child custody issues. He claims she won't let him see the baby. Things hit a boiling point Wednesday during a visit with the baby.
Police say the two got into an argument and Washington grabbed the baby's mom by the throat, almost choking her. Then, as he tried to leave, she ran after him and threw a plant at him. He pushed her, breaking her collar bone when she hit the ground, according to court documents.
Friday, Washington released this statement: "My lawyer and I will continue to cooperate with investigators and welcome the opportunity for all the facts to be presented. I regret that the situation has brought this kind of attention to my family and my team. I look forward to resolving it as soon as possible."
After he was released, Washington flew to Texas to attend his other daughter's birthday party. The judge approved that travel request.
Washington's ex could also face charges. She admitted to throwing the plant. The investigation is not over.
