Brooks, Payton baseball teams `mend fences` at CPS breakfast

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A big debate erupted when a baseball game between Gwendolyn Brooks Academy and Walter Payton College Prep was cancelled last minute.

That game was scheduled to take place on the Far South Side. Rumors circulated that parents from Payton College Prep refused to send their kids into the Roseland neighborhood for the game. But according to a statement from the school, it all came down to an error in communication and a misunderstanding.

Both teams met for breakfast at CPS headquarters Friday morning, in an effort to mend fences. The high school baseball players met free of rivalries and parents, behind closed doors.

The breakfast was described as a way to end pregame jitters. The game between the two schools was rescheduled for May 11.

"It was great," one player said. "It was a great experience. They are better people."

The head of CPS released this statement about the breakfast:

"Today, players from the Payton and Brooks baseball teams came together as proud CPS student-athletes demonstrating the same strength and dignity they show in school and on the field every day. They are ready to move forward and focus on their studies and their season."
