Traditional homestyle Botana from Tijuanas Mexican Kitchen

Mother and son, Marisa and Robert Garcia, join us from Tijuanas Mexican Kitchen to cook up some homestyle Botana, just in time for Cinco de Mayo.


Traditional Homestyle Botana Recipe

Homemade chips


Heat oil in heavy pot

While waiting, stack tortillas in an even pile. With a sharp, heavy knife (or serrated knife) cut the stack in half, then into quarters, then into eights

When oil is very hot, drop tortilla triangles in oil a few at a time

Fry for 2-3 minutes or until light brown and crisp

Place in colander and sprinkle salt over chips



Refried beans (pinto beans) see package for instructions

Chorizo (Mexican sausage) optional

Homemade Corn Chips (see above)

Sliced avocado

Tomato (diced)

Munster cheese (shredded)

Onion (diced)

Green pepper (julienne)

Jalapeno pepper (sliced)



  1. In a sauce pan, apply oil and begin to cook the chorizo.
  2. After the chorizo has properly cooked, add the refried beans and begin to mix the two ingredients together.
  3. Place a generous amount of homemade corn chips on a plate and top with the chorizo and refried bean mix.
  4. After topping the chips with the bean and chorizo mix, sprinkle Munster cheese on top and place under heat (oven or salamander).
  5. After the cheese is baked and melted, begin to add your fresh toppings on top.
  6. You are ready to serve your Botana. For vegetarians, do not add chorizo.
