ATF offers reward of up to $5K in Wis. elementary school arson

Posted: Updated:
ROBERTS, Wis. (KMSP) -

Investigators are offering a reward for information that leads to the arrest of the person or persons who started the arson fire that tore through the St. Croix Central Elementary School building on Tuesday morning.

Scott D. Sweetow, special agent in charge with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, announced the reward just hours after police in Roberts, Wis., confirmed there were signs of forced entry and asked for public tips.

"This arson was an attack on a public institution that displaced hundreds of students and educators for the remainder of the school year," Sweetow said. "Destruction of public property by arson is a particularly cowardly violent crime and I will make sure that all of ATF's resources are made available throughout this investigation".

The fire was reported at about 3:46 a.m., and it was determined to be deliberately set after the Roberts-Warren Volunteer Fire Department suppressed the flames.

So far, the damage to the school building and its contents is estimated at about $1.5 million. School officials expect the building to remain closed for the rest of the school year, and they do not yet know where the 600 displaced students will be taught.

Investigators are asking the public to help solve the crime and are looking for tips about suspicious activity in the area from Monday night through Tuesday morning.

SUBMIT A TIP:

Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling the hotline maintained by the St. Croix County Sheriff's Department at 715-386-4701

Anonymous tips can also be provided directly to the ATF field office in Madison at 608-441-5050.
