DC streetcars in testing phase, service to begin in the fall

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Mayor Vincent Gray says it won't be long until we see streetcars traveling down city streets.

Two cars have been transported to a testing facility in Southeast D.C. Transportation officials say after operational and emergency tests are conducted, the streetcars could be ready for service as soon as this fall.

Six cars will be first used along the H Street corridor in Northeast. The rails have been in place along H Street for over a year, but power lines used to energize the streetcars are not yet in place.

The end goal is to have 33 miles of streetcar rails in the District. A majority of that work could be completed by 2020.
