Posted: Updated:
Athens, CA -

(FOX 11 / CNS) A car being chased by sheriff's deputies today crashed into an SUV in the unincorporated community of Athens Village and burst into flames, and a suspect was taken into custody, authorities said.

The crash near Avalon Boulevard and 135th Street west of Compton was reported about 6:30 a.m., the sheriff's department reported. The car caught fire, and firefighters extinguished the flames.

The suspect was wanted in an attempted kidnapping that occurred about 6:15 a.m. near Avalon Boulevard and University Drive, said sheriff's Sgt. Doug Murakami of the Carson Station. An occupant of the SUV was freed from the wreckage and was taken to a hospital. It was unclear if the suspect was injured.

From Hal Eisner:

It's 6:13am. A shopper is waiting for the Ralph's at University and Avalon to open. A man in a car pulls up. Sheriffs Deputies say he tries to pull her into the car. There's a struggle she gets away, runs into the store .. He follows. Inside he gets her into a bear hug. Ralph's workers call deputies. They pull up, he hears the sirens, she gets away from him -- he gets in his vehicle and leads deputies on a pursuit.

At Avalon and 135th he crashes into an SUV which flips over and bursts into flames. He tries to flee, but is arrested. The woman in the SUV is taken to the hospital - condition unknown. Deputies say that shopper is okay. They also say the shopper and the man who tried to kidnap her did not know each other.
