Beer a labor of love at Sweetwater Brewery

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Whether it's at a restaurant, a ballgame, or on the front porch, a cold beer on a warm day is an American classic. That cold beer you drink may have come from the home of one of the country's top craft brewers -- Atlanta-based Sweetwater Brewing Company.

A word of advice, never tell the brewers at Sweetwater you don't like beer. Otherwise, prepare yourself for a rainbow of ale and a black-and-white argument.

"There's no such thing as a bad beer. There's beer that you might not like, that your palette might not agree with, but you can always find something interesting in there," said Zak Schroerlucke.

Schroerlucke would know. He's the beer education manager at Sweetwater Brewery. It's one of the nation's top craft brewers, which means everything is hand-made at the brewery. The beer is brewed 24 hours a day, and the tours through the facility offer proof. Inside the massive tanks, yeast is turning sugar into alcohol – called fermentation.

"You're literally seeing beer being made in action," said Schroerlucke.

The long brewing process continues with ale draining from barrel to bottles, each one marching like a little glass soldier toward its ultimate destination. Schroerlucke's witnessed the journey from grain to glass a million times. He says it's the delicate craft behind craft beer that puts the sweet in Sweetwater.

"How creative it is, and how much time goes into each beer. This isn't something that's made in two hours," said Schroerlucke.

The tours are offered Wednesday through Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sweetwater Brewery is located at 195 Ottley Street in Atlanta. For more information on the tours and the brewery, click here!
