DC Council to consider moving primary to June

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

The chairman of the D.C. Council wants to push back the date of the primary that's likely to decide the city's next mayor.

The primary is scheduled for April 1, 2014. But Council Chairman Phil Mendelson says that's too early. He introduced legislation Tuesday that would move it to June 11.

The Democratic primary usually decides the mayoral race in the District of Columbia. But the new mayor and other elected officials wouldn't take office until Jan. 1, 2015.

Mayor Vincent Gray hasn't said whether he's seeking re-election and hasn't taken a position on the bill. Several councilmembers may end up running for mayor.

Spring primaries are relatively new to the district. The primary date was moved to April in 2011 so that it would coincide with the presidential primary.
