HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (WJBK) -

An amnesty program is being held throughout the month of May for individuals or businesses with certain outstanding violations with the City of Hamtramck or 31st District Court.

The city is waving penalties on past due amounts for business and pet licenses, building and trade permits, rental property registrations, personal property and income taxes and water bills.

The court will forgo the $30 late fee, 20 percent penalty fee and bench warrant and show cause fees for parking tickets, civil infractions and misdemeanor files with outstanding judgments through December 31, 2012.

To avoid the penalties and fees, we're told payments must be made in full.  You cannot pay with a personal check, but credit cards will be accepted.

A "Safe Surrender" program will be held at the Corinthian Baptist Church on Saturday, May 11 and Saturday, May 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for those who can't appear in court during normal business hours.  The church is located at 1725 Caniff in Hamtramck.

For those owing the city, you can participate in the amnesty program by visiting Hamtramck City Hall weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

For more information, call the city at (313) 876-7700 or the court at (313) 876-7710.
