EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An 18-year-old man picked the wrong person to rob as the victim and other witnesses chased him until police were able to arrest him Monday in north suburban Evanston.

The robbery took place about 7 p.m. in the 300 block of Dodge Avenue, where a 53-year-old Evanston resident was talking on his cell phone in James Park when a man came up from behind, grabbed the phone and ran, according to Evanston police.

The victim and several witnesses gave chase and called police, who found the suspect hiding in a yard in the 1800 block of Kirk Street, a statement from police said.

The victim then identified Francisco Gonzalez as the robber, and he was arrested, police said.

Gonzalez, of 1222 Harvard Terrace in Evanston, was charged with felony theft from a person. His next court appearance will be May 10 in Skokie, according to police.

A statement from police said "several incidents similar have occurred over the past several weeks," but so far, Gonzalez has not been linked to other robberies.

Residents are urged to be alert when using their cell phones outside.
